Virginia Loses Number One Spot in ACC After Upset Loss to Wake Forest

By William Armstead

Charlottesville, VA – The Wake Forest Demon Deacons upset the No. 14 Virginia Cavaliers by a score of 16-9 on November 8th. As a result, Virginia is no longer atop the ACC standings which now belongs to Georgia Tech.

Both teams struggled in this game. Virginia starting quarterback Chandler Morris sustained a blow to the head in the second quarter which sidelined him for the rest of the game. The Cavaliers scored not one touchdown the entire game. The lone touchdown in the ballgame was a punt return TD by Wake Forest receiver Carlos Hernandez in the third quarter. Wake Forest kicker, Connor Calvert, made three field goals from 40, 49, and 50 yards. Virginia kicker Will Bettridge also made three field goals. The Cavaliers were also hurting themselves, losing three fumbles, one being deep in Wake Forest territory. A touchdown on that drive would have tied the game. Wake Forest was held to 64 total passing yards, and running back Demond Claiborne recorded only 75 yards rushing on 25 carries.

Wake Forest will host North Carolina on Saturday, while Virginia will look to rebound against Duke. Virginia needs a win in order to stay in contention for the College Football Playoff.
