Volunteers’ Miscues Lead to Home Defeat Against Oklahoma

By William Armstead

KNOXVILLE, TN – On Saturday night, November 1, 2025, the Oklahoma Sooners came into Knoxville and beat the Tennessee Volunteers by a score of 33-27. The Volunteers were plagued with injuries in its secondary and mistakes that ultimately cost them the game, taking them out of contention for the College Football Playoff.

Tennessee dominated Oklahoma in first half offensive stats, leading them 255 to 99 in total yards. However, Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar threw two interceptions. He was also sacked and fumbled, in which Oklahoma defensive end R Mason Thomas took the ball back 71 yards for a touchdown. Tennessee kicker Max Gilbert missed a 38-yarder in the second quarter. These mistakes allowed Oklahoma to lead for most of the game. Oklahoma’s defense should be given credit, as they held the Volunteers to only 63 rushing yards, sacked Aguilar four times, and came up with two interceptions. Joey Aguilar finished with 393 yards, three touchdowns, and two picks. Tennessee freshman receiver Braylon Staley caught two touchdowns.

As for the Sooners, quarterback John Mateer ran the ball into the endzone for a game-sealing touchdown. Xavier Robinson was dominant, rushing for 115 yards and a touchdown on just 15 carries, and broke away for a 43-yard run. Kicker Tate Sandell went 4/4 on field goal attempts and drilled one from 55.

Both teams have a bye next week. Tennessee will look to rebound against New Mexico State on Nov. 15, while Oklahoma will be preparing for its showdown against No. 4 ranked Alabama.
