The Providence Bruins hosted the Bridgeport Islanders at the Amica Mutual Pavillion in Providence, RI on Sunday afternoon. The Bruins came into Sunday’s matchup with.5-0 record, having already defeated Bridgeport twice this season.
Despite 15 combined shots on goal, 11 for Providence and four for Bridgeport, neither team could find the net in the first period. The teams went into the second period still scoreless.
The first goal came at the 17:08 mark of the second period as Bridgeport’s Cam Berg shot to the top right corner of the net, knocking it in. Providence tied the game at the 12:32 mark of the second with a goal from Georgii Merkulov.
The Bruins would take their first lead as Brent Harrison knocked in the team’s second goal of the period with 8:26 remaining.
As time expired in the period, it appeared Bridgeport scored the game-tying goal. Officials initially ruled a no-goal, and after review, it was determined a goal was not scored. Providence held on to their 2-1 lead at the end of the second period.
Merkulov would score his second goal of the game just 32 seconds into the third period, extending the lead to 3-1. A goal on an empty net gave Providence the 4-1 lead and ultimately the win.
The Bruins will look to remain undefeated as they take on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in Pennsylvania on Wednesday. Puck drop is set fo 7:05 p.m. ET
