By William Armstead

WASHINGTON D.C.- The Golden State Valkyries defeated the Washington Mystics by a score of 68-67 at CareFirst Arena. The Mystics have now dropped four of their last six games, while the Valkyries improve their win streak to two straight games.

The Valkyries’ leading scorer was guard Kate Martin, who came off the bench and finished with 14 points. The Valkyries had three other starters in double figures: center Temi Fagbenle with 10 points, center Iliana Rupert with 11 points, and guard Veronica Burton with 10 points. Burton also added 10 assists, finishing with a double-double, her third of the season. As a team, the Valkyries shot an impressive 42% from behind the arc.

As for the Mystics, all-star guard Sonia Citron led the team with 16 points. All-star forward Kiki Iriafen and forward Shakira Austin both recorded 10 points each. Star Brittany Sykes struggled on the day, going 3-11 from the field. Sykes came up short on a floater with 2.9 seconds remaining in the game that would have put the Mystics up by one to win the game.

The Mystics will look to get back in the win column as they travel to take on the Atlanta Dream on August 3rd. The Valkyries hope to extend their winning streak to three games as they will take on the struggling Chicago Sky in Chicago on August 1st, who only have seven wins on the season so far.
