Genther Joins Yanks as Undrafted Free Agent

By William Armstead

KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island Baseball outfielder Eric Genther has signed a free agent contract with the New York Yankees just days after the 2025 MLB Draft.

Genther is now the second player from Rhode Island to either sign or be drafted by an MLB organization this year. First came his teammate Anthony DePino, who was picked up by the Chicago White Sox in the seventh round.

Genther’s name is all over the school’s record book as he was a four-year starter at outfielder for the team. He has played the second-most career games of any player in Rhode Island history, with 214. The Drexel Hill, Pa. native finished in the program’s career top-10 in numerous categories, including runs batted in (159, second), runs scored (184, third), and hits (250, fifth).

Genther was locked in both on and off the field as he was also a two-time Atlantic 10 All-Academic selection. He led the team with a very impressive .361 batting average and 86 total hits in his senior season. As a team captain, he started all 60 games for the Rams and helped the team win both the A-10 regular season and tournament titles. URI secured a spot at the Baton Rouge Regional as part of the NCAA Tournament.

Genther is the third Ram to sign as a free agent since the 2020 season, along with former teammates Addison Kopack with the Padres and Jackson Coutts with the Nationals. Under head coach Raphael Cerrato, 11 different players have now earned opportunities in the big leagues of the MLB.
