Queens, NY- The New York Mets defeated the New York Yankees by a score of 12 runs to 6. The Mets are now one win away from sweeping the Yankees and also one win away from being tied with the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the NL East. The Yankees are currently second in the AL East, but can lose that position with another loss.

All Yankees players recorded a hit on the day except for star right-fielder Aaron Judge and left-fielder Jasson Dominguez. Third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered in the 2nd inning, catcher Austin Wells homered in the 3rd, and shortstop Anthony Volpe homered in the 7th. First baseman Cody Bellinger’s double in the 6th inning brought Trent Grisham and Oswald Peraza home. Designated hitter Ben Rice’s double in the 8th allowed Cody Bellinger to cross home plate. Pitcher Carlos Rodon recorded four strikeouts on the day, with relievers Scott Effross and Jayvien Sandridge each recording two.

For the Mets, Brandon Nimmo opened the scoring with a home run in the 1st inning that brought home three runners. Nimmo went 2-4, and so did Pete Alonso, who homered in the 5th and 7th innings. Shortstop Francisco Lindor and designated hitter Starling Marte both went 2-3. Marte’s single in the 2nd inning allowed Tyrone Taylor to score. Pitcher Frankie Montas had two strikeouts and allowed four runs. Relievers Ryne Stanek and Edwin Diaz struck out two batters each.

The last game of the series will take place on Sunday, July 6th, as the Mets will look to complete the sweep and take first place in the NL East. The game will be at Citi Field and the first pitch is at 1:40 p.m.
