The Washington Nationals hosted the San Francisco Giants in Game 2 of the three-game series at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. The Giants won the opener by shutting out the Nats 4-0 on Friday, which snapped a five-game winning streak.
Jake Irvin pitched eight innings for the Nats for the second time in his career, he allowed three hits, no earned runs, two walks, and seven strikeouts. He’s also the second Nats pitcher to record eight or more innings as Michael Parker recorded eight in the game against the Baltimore Orioles on April 22.
Kyle Harrison pitched four innings for the Giants in his first start of the season, and it was his longest outing since Aug, 28, 2024 against the Milwaukee Brewers when he went 4 ⅔ innings. He allowed five hits, two earned runs, no walks, and four strikeouts. He was filling in for the injured Justin Verlander.
Amed Rosario doubled in the first and then came home when James Wood hit a two-run homer, as the Nats jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Rosario has now hit in 11 out of the last 13 games. He’s reached safely in 28 out of the last 31 games.
Irvin retired nine straight batters before allowing a two-out walk to Mike Yaztremski in the eighth inning, However, he ended his outing by striking out Heliot Ramos.
Luis Garcia Jr. hit a single in the seventh, and Daylen Lile got his second career hit in as many games. Robert Hassell III grounded out to Tristan Beck and Garcia came home to make it 3-0, in his first major league RBI.
Beck made his season debut after being recalled from Triple-A Sacramento after the injury to Verlander on Friday. He had three innings, he allowed two hits, one earned run, no walks, and two strikeouts. Trevor Rogers pitched the eighth inning, he allowed an infield single by Nathaniel Lowe, and struck out two batters.
Jorge Lopez pitched a 1-2-3 inning which included a strikeout, as he got his first save as a Nat, finalizing the 3-0 shutout against the Giants.
This is the Nationals third shutout victory of the season with the last being on April 22nd against the Orioles with a 7-0 score. They also shutout the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 on April 15th. This is the 25th straight meeting between the two teams where the match was decided by multiple runs, which is the longest in the majors.
Ramos went 0-for-4 which snapped both his 15-game on-base streak and a eight-game hitting streak, it was his second-longest on-base streak and his third-longest career hitting streak. The Giants only got three hits in the match, and Tyler Fitzgerald got two hits, and Jung Ho Lee hit a single in the fourth.
This is the Nationals fourth victory without being given a walk this season, and it’s the Giants third loss without allowing a walk this season, the Giants are 2-2 when they don’t allow free passes, and the Nats are 3-3 when they are not given a free pass this season.
The teams will play a rubber match with a 1:35 pm first pitch, as Michael Soroka will go up against Robbie Ray.
