By Zachary McMahon-

The 2025 NHL Draft Lottery took place on Monday night where the first 16 picks in the NHL Entry Draft were picked via a lottery. The NHL Draft Lottery was broadcasted for the first time ever in NHL Network’s studio in Secaucus, New Jersey, and it was live on ESPN.

The New York Islanders, who had a 3.5 percent chance of taking the first overall pick in the draft, ended up with the first overall selection. This will be their fifth time overall having the first overall pick, and the first since they picked John Tavares with the first overall pick in 2009.

The Boston Bruins wound up in the seventh spot, in their first lottery since 2016 when they got the 14th overall pick and drafted Charlie MacAvoy. This is their highest pick since they picked Tyler Seguin second overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Boston had a 8.5% chance of taking the first overall pick, and they were originally projected to go to the fifth pick.

The San Jose Sharks, who had the highest chance of getting the first overall pick for the second year in a row at 25 percent, fell to the second spot, while the Chicago Blackhawks took the third spot.

Utah HC had the highest jump of the lottery as they were expected to land the 13th spot, moved nine spots to the no. 4 pick.

The Rangers got the 13th pick of the NHL draft, as they moved down one spot from their projected spot at the 12th, and they also had a 3% chance of getting the first pick.

The Entry Draft will take place from June 27-28, 2025 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
