Baltimore Orioles Aquire Cody Poteet

On Saturday, the Baltimore Orioles made a noteworthy move by acquiring right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations. Following the trade, Poteet has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, where he will have the opportunity to further develop his skills.

Poteet, who turned 30 this year, had an impressive Spring Training in 2025 with the Cubs after being brought over from the New York Yankees. This transition occurred on December 17, 2024, when he was traded for outfielder Cody Bellinger and cash considerations.

During the 2024 season, Poteet showcased his potential, finishing with an unbeaten record of 3-0 and a commendable 2.22 ERA over 24.1 innings, allowing just 18 hits, including two home runs. He struck out 16 batters while issuing only eight walks, demonstrating a strong command on the mound during five appearances, four of which were starts. In addition, he had a solid performance in the minor leagues, accumulating another 3-0 record and a 3.40 ERA over 53 innings in 13 starts split between Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Double-A Somerset. Despite his strong efforts, he was not included on the Yankees’ postseason roster for the ALDS, ALCS, or the World Series.

Poteet’s journey began when he was selected by the Miami Marlins in the fourth round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft after a standout career at UCLA. He briefly spent time with the Kansas City Royals organization in 2022 but did not see any action in the major leagues. The highlight of his career came when he made his MLB debut for the Marlins on May 12, 2021, against Arizona, where he secured a victory by allowing just two runs over five innings. In total, Poteet has appeared in 24 major league games, including 13 starts, compiling a 5-4 record with a 3.80 ERA over 83.0 innings pitched between his tenures with Miami and New York.
