Deebo Samuel Moving On To The Washington Commanders

By Tiffany Williams –

Deebo Samuel’s trade request has been officially granted, as the dynamic wide receiver is set to join the Washington Commanders in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. This trade agreement comes just days after 49ers general manager John Lynch publicly stated that the franchise would honor Samuel’s trade request and explore potential suitors willing to take on the talented receiver.

Washington emerged as a viable trade partner following a strong performance in the 2024 season, where they reached the NFC title game largely due to the impressive play of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Commanders are looking to bolster their offensive weaponry, and Samuel’s versatility could be a key addition to their roster.

According to the terms of the extension Samuel signed in 2022, he is scheduled to earn $17.55 million in the 2025 season. However, it’s important to note that the trade will not become official until March 12, 2025, which marks the beginning of the new league year. Between now and then, either team retains the option to withdraw from the agreement if circumstances change.

At 29 years old, Samuel has showcased his ability as an all-purpose weapon during his time with the 49ers; however, his production took a noticeable dip in 2024. He recorded a total of 51 catches for 670 yards and only three receiving touchdowns. In addition to his receiving contributions, Samuel carried the ball 42 times for 136 yards and added one rushing touchdown. These declining stats likely contributed to the 49ers receiving only a fifth-round pick in return from the Commanders, a stark contrast to the high-level player he was in previous years.

The burning question surrounding Samuel now is whether he can rejuvenate his career and recapture the form he displayed in 2021, which was arguably the pinnacle of his performance with over 1,400 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns. In 2024, his decline in production—illustrated by the 670 receiving yards and 136 rushing yards—raises concerns about his current trajectory.

This move also reunites Samuel with Adam Peters, the former assistant general manager of the 49ers, who now holds the same position with the Commanders. Peters has an understanding of Samuel’s unique skill set and potential, and this familiarity could facilitate a smooth transition into Washington’s offensive scheme. Earlier this week, Lynch reiterated the team’s commitment to fulfilling Samuel’s trade request, signaling a new chapter for both the receiver and the franchise.
