Atlanta Dream Sign Brittney Griner

By Tiffany Williams –

The Atlanta Dream has made a huge move by signing Brittney Griner, who is widely regarded as one of the most dominant and impactful players in the history of the WNBA, both on and off the court.

Standing at an impressive 6’9”, she was the No. 1 overall pick by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2013 WNBA Draft and over her remarkable 11-year career she is a ten-time All-Star and three-time Olympic Gold Medalist,

Griner brings to Atlanta elite talent and extensive championship experience with career averages of 17.7 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game, Griner currently ranks 18th all-time in scoring with over 5,600 points and holds the third position for total blocks in league history, with 812.

As a two-time WNBA scoring champion, her dominance on both ends of the floor has earned her six All-WNBA Team selections, solidifying her legacy as one of the greatest players to ever grace the league. Notably, she played a pivotal role in the Mercury’s journey to the 2014 WNBA Championship, where her outstanding performance earned her Finals MVP honors.

Griner’s championship pedigree extends well beyond the WNBA. During her high school career, she led her team to a Texas 5A championship, showcasing her talents early on. She then took her skills to Baylor University, where she played an integral role in leading the Lady Bears to a perfect season and the NCAA National Championship in 2012.

Griner has also proudly represented her country on the international stage, competing in two FIBA World Cups (2014 and 2018) and three Olympic Games, where she brought home Gold Medals in 2016, 2020, and 2024.

Beyond her impressive athletic achievements, Griner is a vocal advocate for equality and inclusion, positioning herself as one of the most prominent figures in sports activism.

With Griner joining a dynamic Atlanta Dream core, the team’s future looks bright.

Griner will team up with fellow Olympians Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray—both recognized as two-time All-Stars—and Jordin Canada, a two-time WNBA champion and a recipient of the All-Defensive First Team honors. Together with Griner, this formidable group forms a strong foundation for the Dream’s aspirations of success in the upcoming 2025 season.
