The New York Islanders hosted the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night at the UBS Arena in Elmont, NY. Both the Islanders and Devils are winners of two straight.
Ilya Sorokin made 29 saves on 33 shots on goal for the Islanders, Jacob Markstrom made 19 saves on 22 shots on goal for the Devils.
Simon Holmstrom scored the first goal of the game for the Islanders in the first period, and it was the only score of the period. Jack Hughes tied it up at one after scoring his first goal of the game in the second period with assists from Dougie Hamliton and Jesper Bratt, who is tied for eighth most assists in the NHL.
Each team scored twice in the third period as Dennis Cholowski and Brock Nelson gave the Islanders a two-goal lead under two minutes apart before the Devils tied it back up in the final minute with Stafan Noesen, Hamilton picked up his second assist of the game, and the game went into overtime.
In 2:35 of overtime, Islanders defenseman Ryan Pulock broke his stick and Hamliton saw that and passed to Hughes for the breakaway with the goal that would win the game for the Devils, 4-3. Devils free agent signee Brett Pesce made a defensive play on Bo Horvat, to deny the scoring chance for the Islanders in overtime.
The Devils go back to Jersey to play the San Jose Sharks on Sunday at 7 pm before playing the next three games in Florida against the Florida Panthers (twice) and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Meanwhile, the Islanders will take a five-game road trip that starts on Tuesday against the Edmonton Oilers at 9 pm eastern puck drop.
