Hampton head coach Trent Boykin was Assistant was promoted to Interim head football coach to start the season, but on October 16th, Boykin was named the new Head Coach of Hampton. On October 19th, Boykin picked up his first win as HC, beating North Carolina A&T 59-17.  Saturday’s win against Elon marks Boykin’s second win as HC.

On Monday, following his win against North Carolina, Boykin was asked during the weekly coaches conference call about getting the interim tag removed, and Boykin said, “I’m pleased that they’ve seen the hard work that our coaches have done, the hard work that our players have shown, and I think that’s what it is. It’s not really me, it’s just them seeing, you know, what we’re accomplishing as a staff and as a program that lets me know that, you know, they see what we’re doing here and they’re happy to see, you know, the moves that we’re making, the progress that we’re making, but, you know, I’m still interviewing, you know, that’s the process in my mind, how I’m approaching this thing is, you know, we’re going to go through the end of this season, again, it’s great, it helps in recruiting, you know, the guys know, hey, he’s going to be here, the guys that are already here on this team, you know, again, because I know at times they may be thinking, you know, what should I do, especially if you’re a young guy, you know, is he going to be around or not? So it solidifies that I’m going to be around, it gives some ease for them so that they can just go out and play and not have to think about, you know, their future as far as, you know, is he going to be here, you know, do I need to get in a transfer portal because if somebody else comes with a different system, again, for our coaching staff, you know, same things, gives them some security that, hey, coach is going to be back, you know, they don’t have to be in their rooms looking at their resumes and trying to in this focus on game planning. And so, you know, I’m just happy for those guys that we can really lock in.”

Malcolm Mays on Saturday recorded his eighth passing touchdown of the season. During the weekly coaches conference call, I asked Coach Boykin about Mays, and he said, “Malcolm is a great quarterback for us. You know, he brings energy. He brings a skill set that we’re excited about.”

Ja’Quan Snipes on Saturday his fifth rushing touchdown of the season, and on Monday when I asked Coach Boykin during the weekly coaches conference call about Snipes, Boykin said, “He’s been a part of this running back group ever since we got here in 2020. And he just keeps getting better and better and improving and improving. And I’m just happy for him, especially him being his senior year that, you know, he’s always been right there on the heels of playing. You know, just some guys that stepped up in the previous years and just played a little bit better. But he stayed the course. And you can see that it’s starting to pay off for him.”

When I asked Coach Boykin what he thought some of the greatest assets are that Snipes brings to this game for Hampton, Boykin said, “He’s been in this program. You know, he knows the system. You know, he’s gotten stronger. He understands, you know, what his strengths and weaknesses are. He has ability to slice, to get through holes that are a little different. He’s always kind of had that ability to kind of slither through small cracks. And now he’s just playing with a lot more confidence with himself.

Chandler Brayboy registered his third touchdown of the season for Elon on Saturday. During the CAA Football coaches weekly conference call on Monday, Elon Head Coach Tony Trisciani was asked about Chandler, and Trisciani said, “Chandler’s very explosive, certainly as a receiver for us and returner.”

Callahan said Ntoh is “A guy that maybe doesn’t get an awful lot of carries in a game.” But when Monmouth gets into short yardage situations or down by the goal line, Callahan said, “We’re gonna feed him the ball because he has the strength. He has the build and the physicality to carry people into the end zone with him. But, you know, he’s a great teammate, and he has shown in other games the ability to take the ball the distance.”
