The Kennesaw State Owls hosted the Liberty Flames on Wednesday night in a CUSA Conference matchup. These two teams are the opposite as the Flames entered undefeated in 5-0 and the Owls were winless at 0-6. The Flames entered as one of 11 undefeated teams in FBS and had a 17-game regular season winning streak.
The game went back-and-forth in the first half, as Kaidon Salter passed for two touchdowns, and Christian Moss had a 41-yard touchdown reception for the Owls and Michael Benefield had a goal line touchdown, as the game was tied at 14.
The Owls took their second lead of the game as Qua Ashley had a six-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter.
The Owls had a 10-point lead after Austin Welch kicked two field goals in the fourth quarter, and then with 1:49 left Salter threw to Elijah Canion for a 17-yard touchdown, as Liberty cut the deficit down to 27-24.
The Owls then recovered a onside kick, but could not get a first down so Liberty had the ball back with six seconds left. After Salter threw out of bounds, the fans rushed the field but the officials put a second back on the clock, in which Liberty had one more play and would fumble a lateral as the Owls shock the Flames 27-24, and Kennesaw State gets their first victory as a member of the FBS.
The Owls had also gotten their first win against a Division I Opponent since Nov. 5, 2022 against UT Martin. They had won against D2 Tusculum University, independent Lincoln (CA), and NCCAA Division I member Virginia-Lynchburg in 2023.
This is the first time in 23 years, that a team that is 0-5 or worse has beaten a team 5-0 or better in the FBS.
The Flames will play next Wednesday against Jacksonville State, while Kennesaw State will face Western Kentucky on Wednesday.
