NHL Frozen Frenzy Recap

By Zachary McMahon-

On Tuesday, the NHL had it’s Frozen Frenzy 2024, which is a day that all 32 NHL teams play. ESPN produced a whiparound shot where they counted all the total goals from all the games, and ECSH will be going over the East coast teams and how they did.

First, we have the Philadelphia Flyers and the Washington Capitals for the first part of a home-and-home series at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA. The Capitals started off with two shorthanded goals in the first period as Nic Dowd and Andrew Magniapane both scored on the man down. Travis Sanheim put the Flyers on the board with a goal of his own, but that would be the only one Philly scores, as John Carlson and Jacob Chychrun extended the Capitals to a final score of 4-1.

The Florida Panthers hosted the Minnesota Wild at the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, FL. Filip Gustavsson kept up his hot streak by making 24 saves on 25 shots. Marco Rossi and Marcus Johansson scored 24 seconds apart for a 2-0 lead, and then Mats Zuccarello scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Matt Boldy and Joel Erickson Ek both scored to make it 5-1 at the end of the second period, which is the Wild’s biggest lead in Sunrise since they led 6-2 in Oct. 16, 2008. Sam Bennett got his fifth goal of the season with Matthew Tkachuk getting one of the assists after missing the last five games with an illness returned to the ice. Jake Middleton had three assists, which ties a career high in a game, as the Wild kept their final score of 5-1 against the Panthers.

It was a high scoring game in New Jersey, as the Tampa Bay Lightning and the New Jersey Devils duked it out in Newark. Brandon Hagel scored his second career hat trick and Victor Hedman scored two goals for the Lightning. Timo Meier scored two goals and Jack Hughes, Nathan Bastian and Stefan Noessen each had scored for the Devils. Anthony Cirelli had a career-high of four assists for the Lightning. The Lightning won 8-5 over the Devils.

The Buffalo Sabres hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, N.Y. In the second period, Peyton Krebs and Ryan McLeod scored goals 83 seconds apart, as they jumped to a 2-0 lead. After Tage Thompson made it 3-0 in the third period, Thomas Harley and Tyler Seguin both scored for the Stars 2 minutes and 24 seconds, as they inched closer while the Stars had an empty net. The Sabres put the game to bed when Alex Tuch scored an empty net goal and then won 4-2 over the Stars.

The New York Rangers traveled to North of the Border to face the Montreal Canadiens, and then went in a 4-0 scoring run to start the first period, which included a power play goal by Filip Chytil. Nick Suzuki scored twice for the Habs in the second and third period, and then Chytil scored again in the third, and Kappo Kakko made it 7-2 Rangers, which was the final score.

The Detroit Red Wings had a defensive showing against the New York Islanders, while goaltender Alex Lyon stopped all 30 shots on goal, and Patrick Kane scored the lone goal as the Red Wings won 1-0.

The Boston Bruins went to Bridgestone Arena to face the Nashville Predators, and were shutout 4-0 after Juuse Saros stopped all 30 shots. Jeremy Swayman made 38 saves on 42 shots, as the shutout streak in Nashville ended with Ryan O’Reilly’s powerplay goal on Charlie MacAvoy’s penalty.

Connor McDavid shined again for the Oilers, as he scored two for Edmonton as they faced the Carolina Hurricanes, however Shayne Gostisbere and Martin Necas tied it up in the third for the Canes, and the game went into overtime. Sebastian Aho scored the game-winning goal to win it 3-2 over the Oilers, and make the Oilers first overtime loss of the season.

Last but certainly not least, the Pittsburgh Penguins traveled to Calgary to face the Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta. The game was tied at three at the end of regulation and since overtime was not enough, and the game went into the shootout. Justin Kirkland scored the last goal, while Dustin Wolf who made 38 saves for the Flames, stopped Evgeni Malkin’s shot, as the Flames squeeze out the Penguins, 4-3.

A total of 98 goals were scored for the entire night in the NHL with all 32 teams playing, with the Bruins, Islanders, and the Utah HC the only teams to be shutout in the games.
