On Saturday, the New York Yankees played Game 5 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) against the Cleveland Guardians. The Yankees secured a 5-2 victory, winning the 2024 ALCS 4-1 and clinching the American League Championship for the 41st time in franchise history. This victory marked their first ALCS win since 2009 when they also captured their 27th World Series Championship. Notably, this was the first time the Yankees clinched the pennant on the road since 1999 at Boston.
The game saw Josh Naylor scoring in the bottom of the second inning, putting the Guardians ahead 1-0. The Guardians extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with Andrés Giménez scoring, bringing the score to 2-0.
However, the Yankees made a strong comeback in the top of the sixth inning, with Giancarlo Stanton hitting a game-tying two-run home run, evening the score at 2-2. Juan Soto’s go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the tenth inning secured the Yankees’ 5-2 lead.
Giancarlo Stanton’s outstanding performance throughout the series led to him being named the Most Valuable Player of the 2024 American League Championship Series. Notably, he is the ninth Yankee to win this award, joining a prestigious list of players such as Graig Nettles, Bernie Williams, and Mariano Rivera.
Looking ahead, the Yankees are scheduled to play Game 1 of the 2024 World Series on Friday, Oct. 25, against the winner of the Mets/Dodgers NLCS. If the Mets win, the Yankees would have home field advantage, but if the Dodgers win, they would open on the road.
If the Yankees face the Dodgers, it would mark their 12th World Series encounter, with the Yankees having won 8 out of 11 previous matchups. A potential Yankees vs. Mets World Series would create the 15th all-time “Subway Series,” with the Yankees having previously won the 2000 World Series in five games against the Mets.
The Mets and Dodgers are set to face off on Sunday night at 8:00 PM, and Zach McMahon will have the postgame report on East Coast Sports Hub.
