Jags Close Out London Trip with Victory over Patriots at Wembley, 32-16

By Zachary McMahon-

The Jacksonville Jaguars played their second game in London against the New England Patriots on Sunday morning at Wembley Stadium. The Jags lost to the Chicago Bears in their first game in London last Sunday, and then the Pats entered with a five-game losing streak, which tied for the longest streak in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints entering this game.

This is the second year that the Pats have played in Europe as they had a loss against the Indianapolis Colts, and this is the third time that they have played in London as they won their other two times in 2012 against the then-St. Louis Rams and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2009.

Drake Maye made his second start for the Patriots after making his first start against the Houston Texans at Gillette last Sunday.

Former Jags running back JaMaycal Hasty shaked off defenders from the Jags after a pass from Maye for a 16 yard touchdown in the first quarter. That was his second career receiving touchdown, with the first being against the Baltimore Ravens in 2022.

After the Jags punted on their first drive, the Jags went off for 25 straight unanswered points, as the Jags ended the third quarter with a 25-10 lead. This included a 96 yard punt return touchdown by Parker Washington in the second quarter. That was the first punt return touchdown for the Jags since Keelan Cole Sr. did one of 91 yards against the Green Bay Packers in 2020. This set the longest punt return in Jaguars history.

However, the Jags only scored three points in the third quarter, so the Pats had a chance to comeback, and they tried with a Maye 22-yard touchdown pass to K.J. Osbourn made it 25-16.

After an eight-play drive resulted in a punt, the Pats had another chance to inch closer to close the deficit, although it was still a two-score game. A holding penalty and a 14 yard sack by Tijan Walker brought the Pats to 4th and 26 after the two minute warning. Maye tried to pass to Hunter Henry but fell short.

With that the Jags pound the final nail to the Patriots, as they were at the 10 yard line, and Tank Bigsby scored his second rushing touchdown of the game as the Jags won 32-16. That was Bigsby’s second two-touchdown game in three games, as he also had it against the Indianapolis Colts.

Maye went 26/37 with 276 passing yards with two passing touchdowns and no interceptions, while Trevor Lawrence threw for 193 yards and a touchdown to rookie receiver Brian Thomas Jr.

Henry had eight receptions with 92 yards, and Thomas Jr. had 89 receiving yards, as they led their respective teams.

Maye is the sixth rookie QB to start in a London game, and the first to lose since 2021 when Zach Wilson lost to the Atlanta Falcons in London, the last two QBs won in Lawrence, in his first career win against the Miami Dolphins in 2021, and Caleb Williams of the Bears last week.

The Jags will go back to Jacksonville to face the Packers on Sunday at 1 pm kickoff on FOX, while the Pats will head back to Foxboro to face the New York Jets on Sunday at 1 pm on CBS.
