Kennesaw State Stays Winless after Loss to Middle Tennessee, 14-5

By Zachary McMahon-

The Kennesaw State Owls went to Middle Tennessee State to face the Blue Raiders at Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadium in Murfreesboro, TN on Tuesday night. The Owls are still looking for their first victory in the FBS level since transferring from the FCS this season in the Conference USA football conference. The Blue Raiders entered the matchup on a five-game losing streak after winning their season opener against Tennessee Tech on Aug. 31. This was the first ever meeting between the two programs.

In the first offensive drive for the Owls they went down to the goal line after a 60-yard run by Qua Ashley, and a run by Michael Benefield led them to the eight. They inched along but on fourth down running back Preston Daniels was stopped at the goal line and it was a turnover on downs.

With the ball on their own 1 yard line, the Blue Raiders, the Owls stopped Jekail Middlebrook in the end zone for the safety. Middlebrook bounced back with a touchdown run on the goal line later in the quarter making it 7-2 Blue Raiders.

Owls QB Khalib Johnson threw two interceptions to the Blue Raiders, as nobody was able to score in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Auburn transfer Omari Kelly returned a 61 yard punt for a touchdown as they went to a 14-2 lead.

Owls kicker Austin Welch kicked a 37-yard field goal to inch closer to the deficit, but three straight three-and-outs closed the gap, as the Owls stayed winless against the Blue Raiders, 14-5.

The Owls will go back to Georgia and will face the Liberty Flames next Wednesday on CBS Sports Network, and then the Blue Raiders will face Jacksonville State on Wednesday on ESPN2.
