Flyers Lose to Oilers in Overtime in Edmonton, 4-3

By Zachary McMahon-

The Philadelphia Flyers traveled out west to face the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta. The Flyers are coming off a loss against the Calgary Flames on Saturday and the Oilers entered the matchup 0-3 on the season in which they were outscored 15-3.

Samuel Ersson started for the Flyers, and he made 29 saves on 33 shots, while Stuart Skinner had his first 30+ save game of the season on 33 shots for the Oilers.

Last year’s no. 7 pick Matvei Michkov scored his first two career goals on the powerplay in the first period, as the Flyers ended with a 2-0 lead. Michkov is the sixth rookie in Flyers history to have two powerplay goals in a game, and the first to have his first two career goals on the powerplay in the same game. The last one to do it was Nolan Patrick who did it in his rookie season, on April 3, 2018 against the New York Islanders.

Adam Henrique and Connor Brown stormed back to tie it back up at 2 for the Oilers, but the Flyers ended another period with the lead after Bobby Brink scored his first goal of the season in the second period.

Evan Bouchard tied it back up for the Oilers in the third period with 3:42 left in the period after Leon Draisaitl made a backhand pass to Connor McDavid and then rapidly got it across to Bouchard for a one-timer.

The game would go into overtime, and 56 seconds into overtime McDavid was on the breakaway but was stopped by Ersson, then McDavid was able to recover and got it to Draisaitl, and then he scored for the overtime winner, as the Flyers fell to the Oilers 4-3.

The Oilers avoided going 0-4 for the third time in their 44 year history in the NHL, as they had done it twice before in 2015 (McDavid’s rookie season) and 1995. The Flyers gained one point with the overtime loss as they went to 1-1-1 on the young season.

The Flyers will close out their season-opening road trip in Seattle on Thursday at 10 pm eastern, while the Oilers will head south and face the Nashville Predators on Thursday at 8 pm eastern.
