In the first game of the WNBA semifinals, the Connecticut Sun secured a hard-fought 73-70 victory against the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday. This win marked the first time this season that a team had won a postseason game on the road.
Marina Mabrey was instrumental in leading the charge for Connecticut, contributing 20 points in 38 minutes. Her impressive performance included one offensive rebound, four defensive rebounds, three assists, and one block. She made 7 out of 19 field goal attempts and sunk 6 out of 11 three-pointers.
Mabrey joined an exclusive group of players in Sun franchise history by hitting six three-pointers in a postseason game, a feat previously achieved only by Courtney Williams, Jasmine Thomas, and DeWanna Bonner.
Alyssa Thomas also delivered a standout performance, contributing 17 points, three offensive rebounds, seven defensive rebounds, nine assists, and three steals.
DiJonai Carrington put up 13 points, achieving a postseason career-high of nine rebounds and adding four assists. DeWanna Bonner secured her 17th postseason double-double, scoring 10 points, grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds, providing five assists, and making one block, and Veronica Burton, who came off the bench and played for 27 minutes, contributed five points.
Following the game, Connecticut Sun Head Coach Stephanie White expressed her pride in her team’s performance, describing the victory as a hard-earned and gritty win. She also emphasized that it seemed like every player made crucial contributions that led to the win.
The Connecticut Sun have a strong track record in WNBA Semifinal Game 1s, having emerged victorious in five of their last six such games, including the last three seasons.
