The Rutgers Scarlet Knights football team hosted the Washington Huskies at HighPoint Stadium on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ on Friday night. Rutgers came into the game at 3-0 while Washington came into the game with a 3-1 record, losing the Apple Cup to Washington State on Sept. 14.
The lone score of the first quarter was a 22-yard field goal from Washington kicker Grady Gross. Rutgers scored the game’s first touchdown three and a half minutes into the second quarter as running back Kyle Monangai scored from one yard out.
The Huskies blocked a field goal in the final minute in the half, but a penalty gave Rutgers a first down. The Scarlet Knights would capitalize as quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis found Ian Strong for a 15-yard touchdown on the very next play. Rutgers would take their 14-3 lead into the locker room.
Washington had a chance to cut into the lead to start the third quarter, but an incomplete pass on 4th and goal from the Rutgers two-yard line gave the Scarlet Knights the ball back. The Huskies would score on the next drive as quarterback Will Rogers threw a 51-yard touchdown to Denzel Boston. Rutgers maintained their 14-10 lead after three quarters.
The Scarlet Knights would extend on their lead to 21-10 with 10:57 left as Samuel Brown V would score from 37 yards out. After converting a 4th and inches inside two minute timeout, Rogers and Boston hooked up for the second time to close the gap to 21-18 after Washington succeeded on converting a two-point conversion with 1:40 remaining.
With three seconds left, Gross had a chance to tie the game and send it into OT. However, the kick sailed wide right and Rutgers escaped with a 21-18 win to improve to 4-0.
The Scarlet Knights will head on the road next week to take on another Big Ten opponent in Nebraska. Kickoff time has yet to be determined.
