The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traveled to Ford Field in Detroit for the second week of the season on Sunday afternoon in a rematch of last year’s Divisional Round where the Lions won 31-20 over the Bucs. .
Three starters from the Bucs were inactive with injuries with offensive tackle Luke Godeke out with a concussion, Antoine Winfield Jr. with a foot, and defensive lineman Calijah Kancey with a calf injury.
The Bucs and Lions both won their season opening matchups, as the Bucs won 37-20 over the Washington Commanders, and the Lions winning a overtime thriller on Sunday night football against Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams.
A pair of field goals from Chase McLaughlin and Jake Bates tied the game up at six until Baked Mayfield threw a 41-yard pass to Chris Godwin in the second quarter.
The Lions got their first lead of the game after David Montgomery had a 1-yard touchdown run in the third, but Mayfield answered back with a touchdown run of his own late in the third.
There would be no scoring in the fourth as the Bucs held on 20-16 over the Lions.
Jared Goff threw for 307 yards with two interceptions, and two dropped interceptions from the Bucs defense. Mayfield was efficient through the air while going 12-for-19 with 185 passing yard with the passing and rushing touchdown and an interception.
Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson had three sacks on Mayfield in the first, and finished with a career-high five sacks. Amon-Ra St. Brown led the Lions with 11 receptions and 119 receiving yards.
Chris Godwin had most of Mayfield’s passing yardage as he had 117 yards on seven receptions.
Bucs defensive tackle Vita Vea left the game with a knee injury, and Bucs head coach Todd Bowles did not have an update on Vea after the game.
The Bucs will play the next two games at home against the Denver Broncos and the Philadelphia Eagles while the Lions will play their first road game of the season against the Arizona Cardinals at 4:25 on FOX.
