The Atlanta Braves traveled to Minneapolis to face the Minnesota Twins in Game 2 of the three-game series at Target Field in Minneapolis on Tuesday night. The Braves are trying to win the series after winning the opener on Monday.
The Twins transferred Joe Ryan from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list with a right shoulder strain and designated righthander Trevor Richards for assignment. They claimed Michael Tonkin off waivers from the New York Yankees and selected the contract of righthander Caleb Boushley, as he returns to the team after he was designated for assignment on July 14, and sent outright to St. Paul.
Spencer Scwellenbach tossed 4 ⅔ innings, allowing no earned runs with five hits, three walks and eight strikeouts. Simeon Woods Richardson also pitched 4 ⅔ innings, allowing three hits, four earned runs, three walks, and three strikeouts.
Michael Harris II hit a two-run home run for the first runs of the game for the Braves in the second inning and Marcell Ozuna had a two-run single in the fifth as the Braves were up 4-0.
The Twins tied it after scoring four runs in the seventh and eighth innings, which include two doubles from Trevor Larnach. Raisel Iglesias and Griffin Jax both pitched shutout ninth innings, which got it into extra innings.
The Braves went off for a four-run tenth inning with Matt Olson bringing Jarred Kelenic home on a groundout, a RBI single by Travis d’Arnaud, and a two-run double by Ramon Laureano. After Olson’s five-RBI game on Monday, he’s now had 10 RBI in the last nine games. Olson also had a double in the second inning, which made it five straight hits being in extra-bases, which ended in the seventh with a single.
Jose Miranda and Larnach both brought runners in to score for the Twins but it would not be enough as the Braves held on 8-6.
Orlando Arcia walked twice as he has reached safely in eight out of his last 10 games. Whit Merrifield went 0-for-6 which snapped his 20-game on-base streak, which was the fourth-longest active streak in the MLB.
The Braves will try to sweep the Twins today with Chris Sale going up against David Festa at 7:40 pm first pitch.
