The Washington Nationals hosted the New York Yankees for the series opener in a three-game series opener on Monday night at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. The Nats spoiled a sweep in the hands of the Atlanta Braves with a win on Sunday, while the Yankees have won four out of the last five games.
The Yankees placed right hander Ian Hamliton to the 60-day injured list, and claimed Duke Ellis off waivers from the Seattle Mariners for his fourth organization of the season, which includes playing eight games with the Chicago White Sox where he had four at-bats, and scored one run.
Dylan Crews made his debut with the Nationals after he had his contract selected from Triple-A Rochester. He went 0-for-3 with a walk in his major league debut. They also optioned catcher Riley Adams to Triple-A Rochester.
Michael Parker pitched four innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs, two walks, and five strikeouts. Nestor Cortes tossed 6 ⅔ innings, allowing four hits, one earned run, two walks and five strikeouts.
Gleyber Torres hit a lead off homer in the first inning, as he hit his second leadoff homer this season, and extended his on-base streak to 21 games.
D.J. LeMathieu had two RBIs on sacrifice flies and Austin Wells hit a solo homer as the Yankees lead 4-0. Wells has reached safely in 24 out of the last 27 games.
Juan Yepez broke the shutout with a solo home run in the seventh inning, and Jacob Young added another run to the Nats, but with Jazz Chisholm Jr. padding the Yankees lead with a home run in the eighth, the Yankees won 5-2. Chisholm Jr. had now hit in 14 out of the 18 games he has played with the Yankees.
Young also hit a double in the sixth, as he extended his hitting streak to six games. Andres Chaparro hit a double in the second inning, in which he has hit four doubles in the last five games. James Wood walked twice to extend his on-base streak to six games.
Aaron Judge hit a single and walked to extend his on-base streak to 16 games.
The teams will play the second game on Tuesday at 6:45 pm as Patrick Corbin will pitch against Gerritt Cole.
