Jesse Winker Hits Second Mets Walk-Off in Three Games in Win against Orioles, 4-3

By Zachary McMahon-

The New York Mets hosted the Baltimore Orioles for the series finale on Wednesday, as it was a rubber match after the O’s won the second game on Tuesday.

The Orioles selected the contract of Cole Irvin, to make his first appearance on July 29, after he was designated for assignment on July 30 and was outrighted on August 2. The Orioles also claimed Emmanuel Rivera from the Miami Marlins, while designating RHP Nick Avila and shortstop Verrin Vavra, who has not played in the major leagues this season, despite adding him to the 40-man roster on July 21. Dillion Tate was also sent to Triple-A Norfolk.

Irvin started as he went 4 ⅓ innings, allowed five hits, two earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts. Sean Mananea tossed seven innings, allowing three hits, three earned runs, no walks and nine strikeouts.

Francisco Lindor hit a solo homer in the third inning to bring the first run of the game, as it was his second hit of the game, and extended hit on-base streak to 20 games, and has multiple hits in three out of the last five games, and in nine out of the last 14 games.

J.D. Martinez brought Harrison Bader home on a fielder’s choice in the fifth inning and Austin Slater tied the game with a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Slater has reached base in 10 out of his 12 games with the Orioles.

Matt Vientos hit a solo homer for the Mets in the seventh, and then Adley Rutschmann sent Colton Cowser home on a sacrifice fly as it was tied at three. Vientos hit his 20th home run, and he has 19 doubles, where he’s one more away from having 20 doubles, which would make him the third Met to have a 20/20 season joining Lindor and Pete Alonso.

Then, Jesse Winker hit a walk-off homer to get the series win for the Mets, 4-3. This is the second walk-off in three days, and this was the second career walk-off homer from Winker, as he hit one on June 7, 2018 against the Colorado Rockies as a member of the Cincinnati Reds, and the Mets’s fifth walkoff home run.

Cowser had a triple and a double, as he has two straight games with multiple extra base hits for the second time this season, as he had this streak on April 11 & 12 against the Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers respectively, he has also hit in 26 out of the last 32 games. Ramon Urias extended his on-base streak to six games with a walk. Ryan O’Hearn struck out in his pinch hit appearance for Slater, as it snaps his streak of 30 straight plate appearances without striking out, which was the second longest streak behind Luis Arraez.

The Orioles will go back to Camden Yards as they will be playing a four-game series against the Houston Astros starting on Thursday, as Corbin Burnes will go up against Spencer Arrigheti. While the Mets will travel to San Diego to play a four-game series against the San Diego Padres starting on Thursday at 9:40 as Luis Severino will go up against Dylan Cease.
