Rockies Beat the Nationals, 3-1

By Zachary McMahon-

The Washington Nationals hosted the Colorado Rockies at Nationals Park in DC in the series opener of the three-game series on Tuesday night. The Nats snapped a four-game losing streak with a win on Monday against the Philadelphia Phillies, while the Rockies won their rubber match against the San Diego Padres on Sunday to win the series.

Before the game, Robert Garcia was activated from the bereavement list, and Joey Gallo was activated from the 10-day injured list, so both Travis Blankenhorn and Orlando Ribalta were sent down to Triple-A Rochester.

DJ Herz pitched 5 ⅓ innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs, two walks, and seven strikeouts. Austin Gomber pitched seven innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, two walks, and five strikeouts, as this was his fifth start where he’s gone seven innings or later this season, and he has thrown at least six innings in three out of his last four starts.

Ezekiel Tovar hit a double in the first inning, and Ben Doyle singled while Ryan McMahon brought Tovar home on an RBI single for the first run of the game. Doyle has now hit safely in his last nine games with an at-bat.

In the sixth, Jones hit an RBI single, and Jose Tena had a throwing error that brought Brendan Rodgers home as the Rockies led 3-0. C.J. Abrams had the only run for the Nats on a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, as it was his 18th of the season, tying his career high last season.

Tyler Kinley and Angel Chivilli shut out the Nats in the final two innings, as the Nats lost to the Rockies, 3-1. Chivilli pitched his first career save as a rookie for the Rockies.

Luis Garcia hit a double and a single, as he hit safely in 15 out of the last 19 games. Alex Call doubled in the eighth as he has hit safely in 11 out of his last 13 starts.

Rogers hit a single in the sixth and has now hit safely in 14 out of 16 games in August. Catcher Drew Romo got his first career hit in the ninth as a infield single.
