The New York Jets and the Washington Commanders faced off at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ for their preseason game, and it was an exciting match. The Jets managed to secure a 20-17 victory over the Commanders, showing great determination on the field. The last time these two teams met in the preseason was back in 2018, where the Commanders emerged victorious with a 15-13 win.
In this recent game, Israel Abanikanda made a significant impact for the Jets by scoring a 2-yard touchdown run with 7:09 remaining, and Austin Seibert sealed the victory with a 37-yard go-ahead field goal with just 21 seconds left on the clock. The atmosphere was electrifying as the Jets claimed the win on their home turf.
The quarterbacks were also in the spotlight with Adrian Martinez completing 6 of 10 passes for 104 yards for the Jets. Andrew Peasley also made a mark by going 8 of 11 for 73 yards and throwing a touchdown. Braelon Allen’s impressive 54 rushing yards further added to the Jets’ strong performance.
On the other side, the Commanders’ quarterbacks, Jeff Driskel and Sam Hartman, put on a solid display by combining for 15 of 28 completions for 170 yards. Notably, Washington’s rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, who was the team’s first-round draft pick, showed promise by starting the game and going 2 of 3 for 45 yards in limited time. Additionally, he showcased his versatility by scoring a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, demonstrating his potential impact on the Commanders’ offense.
Following Saturday’s win for the Jets, Andrew Peasley said, “I thought I did pretty decent for my first time getting real snaps in the NFL. Had a lot of fun, man. That was my main goal, is just be confident and go out there, play. I thought we all, the second group, when I went out did really well, made some plays, JB (Jason Brownlee) in the end zone with that touchdown and just all around ran the ball really well, which helps fast games.”
When asked what he wants to work on before the next game, Peasley said, “Just keep building confidence and running the system. It’s a big playbook, keep learning. I’m around two really good vets, Aaron (Rodgers) and Tyrod (Taylor), so just keep learning their wisdom and find ways to get better.”
Joe Tippmann, following Saturday’s win was asked if he was surprised to be the only starter playing in the first preseason game, Tippmann said, “No, I mean I’m a second year guy, just being able to go out there and get my feet wet I think. It was nice to be able to get out there, get into the flow of the game, working on my ritual, my daily ritual, how I approach each game, so just kind of getting a jump on that was good.”
When Braelon Allen was asked about his performance on Sunday, Allen said, “I thought it was good. Obviously, got to watch the film and evaluate it, but it felt good. It always takes me a little bit to get into the flow of the game. My first few caries were slipping around a little bit and stuff like that, but I thought the o-line did a great job. Every carry I had there was space, so they made it really easy. Like I said, just got to get back into the film room and evaluate and get better.”
