The Philadelphia Phillies traveled to Los Angeles to face the Los Angeles Dodgers for a series opener on Monday night. The Phillies snapped a six-game losing streak with a 6-0 win against the Seattle Mariners, while the Dodgers are winners of two straight.
Freddie Freeman made an emotional return after spending eight days tending to his three year old son who is suffering from guillain-barre syndrome. However, for the second time this season Cavan Biggio was designated for assignment after replacing Freddie Freeman at first base. He was given a standing ovation prior to his first at-bat and Bryce Harper gave him a big hug at first base after a single in the third inning.
Blake Trienen was placed on the 15-day injured list with left hip discomfort, and the Dodgers activated Bruscar Graterol from the 60-day injured list.
Aaron Nola went six innings, allowed eight hits, four earned runs, no walks, and four strikeouts, while Tyler Glasnow went six innings, allowed five hits, three earned runs, no walks, and nine strikeouts.
In the second inning, Nick Castellanos hit a two-out triple for his third of the season, and then came home on a infield single by Bryson Stott, Austin Hays then singled and went to second on the throw, and Stott came home on a wild pitch by Glasnow while Garrett Stubbs was at the plate, Stubbs ended up striking out for end the inning.
The Dodgers went off for four runs in the third inning which included a two-run homer by Teoscar Hernandez to give the Dodgers the lead.
In the fifth inning, Shohei Ohtani hit a 117.1 MPH double, which is the fourth-hardest batted balls tracked by Statcast by the Dodgers since 2015, and the first three spots are all Ohtani’s homers
Alec Bohm got the deficit to one run with a RBI groundout that scored Kyle Schwarber, and then Ohtani padded the lead to 5-3 Dodgers.
Castellanos led off the ninth with a single, but Daniel Hudson retired the last three batters to secure his eighth save of the season.
Stubbs fouled a ball off his shin in the fifth inning, but he stayed in the game.
Gavin Lux extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a double and a single, and has recorded a hit in 13 out of his last 16 games. Enrique Hernandez and Will Smith were the only Dodgers to not have a hit in this game.
Bohm extended his on-base streak to 23 games with a single in the eighth, which is the longest active streak in the MLB. Schwarber extended his hitting streak to five games with a single in the sixth, and also extended his on-base streak to 11 games.
The Dodgers will send Clayton Kershaw on his third start of the season, and his 17th start against the Phillies when they play at 10:10 pm. The Phillies will have Christopher Sanchez who is looking for his second career win against the Dodgers.
