The US women’s basketball team took on Germany at the Mauroy Stadium in northern France on Sunday. Both the US and Germany were 2-0 headed into the final game of group play.
Germany got off to a hot start, leading 15-6 before the first timeout called by the US. They would make a run to close it to 17-14 and both teams would knock down another bucket to make it a 19-16 game after the frist quarter.
A Jackie Young three tied the game at 19 and after another bucket and a foul shot by Germany, Kahleah Cooper hit a three to tie the game at 22. An Alyssa Thomas layup gave the US their first lead at 24-22 with 6:52 left in the half.
The US would go on a big run and led 32-24 with 4:22 left in the half, leading to a Germany timeout. They would continue to keep control in the second quarter and led 41-29 at halftime.
Jackie Young would take over for US in the second half, including a buzzer-beater to end the third quarter, and the US went on to defeat Germany 87-68 to win Group C and clinch the top seed in the knockout round. Young finished with 19 points and four rebounds.
The knockout round begins Wednesday with the matchips to be determined.
