LeMathieu’s Grand Slam Powers Yankees to Victory Over Phillies, 6-5

By Zachary McMahon-

The Philadelphia Phillies hosted the series finale against the New York Yankees on Wednesday afternoon after the Yankees took the first two matchups and were going for the sweep and their fifth straight victory.

Will Warren was sent back down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after making his debut in Tuesday’s victory where he went 5 ⅓ innings in a no-decision against the Phillies. So they recalled Ron Marcinaccio from Triple-A, but he did not pitch in the win, and was sent down afterwards.

Christopher Sanchez was the starter for the Phillies in which he went 5 ⅔ innings, as he allowed eight hits, six earned runs, and one walk while striking out seven. Sanchez got his 98th strikeout of the season, which makes it his new career-high when he surpassed his 96 strikeouts last season. Nestor Cortes went 5 ⅓ innings for the Yankees, allowing three hits, three earned runs, two walks, and six strikeouts.

The Yankees struck first in the biggest way possible, with the third career grand slam for DJ LeMathieu in the second inning. This was after singles by Giancarlo Stanton and Jazz Chisholm Jr., who extended his hitting streak to five games dating back to Friday when he was on the Miami Marlins, and then a walk by Alex Verdugo.

The Phillies cut the deficit to one when Weston Wilson hit a solo homer for his second homer of the season in the fifth, and then LeMathieu came for more, LeMathieu had a two-run double to make it a career high six RBIs in the sixth as the Yankees were leading 6-3. LeMathieu had five RBIs in a game in each season between 2018-2020 between the Colorado Rockies and the Yankees This was LeMathieu’s first game with two extra-base hits since August 25, 2023, against the Tampa Bay Rays, as he homered twice in that game.

Nick Castellanos brought home Alec Bohm twice to cut the deficit to one and Yunior Marte, Tanner Banks, and Carlos Estevez all did not allow a hit in relief of Sanchez, but the Phillies still came up short 6-5 against the Yankees, as the Bombers completed the sweep.

Banks made his Phillies debut after being acquired in a trade with the Chicago White Sox before the deadline on Tuesday as he pitched the seventh inning allowing a walk and striking out one batter.

This is the first time that the Phillies have been swept since July 22-24, 2022 when they were swept at home by the Chicago Cubs, and they have lost 11 out of their last 15 games. Bryce Harper was 0-for-5 as he’s been facing a 1-for-31 slump.

Aaron Judge reached base multiple times in each game of the first five games of the road trip, but he did not reach base in this game as he struck out four times for the fourth time this season.

Juan Soto hit a bunt single and walked in the game, as it was his fifth straight game where he’s reached base multiple times, and 13 out of his last 17, and he’s reached in every game since the All-Star break, and leads the majors in the amount of games that he’s reached base this season with 95.

Along with his walk in the first, Dugie also singled in the sixth, in which he has now reached base multiple times in each of his last six games, and eight of his last nine.

Castellanos had three RBIs in the game for the fifth time this season, and he’s had 14 RBI since July 13 against the Oakland Athletics, which was the last time he had 3+ RBIs. Kyle Scwarber has waled multiple times in three consecutive games for the fourth time in his career, and the three other times came last season with the Phillies. Bohm hit his second triple of the season in the eighth, and he also doubled in the sixth, which takes him to 51 extra-base hits which is second in the National League, and it ties his career high in 2023. He also has a career-high on-base streak of 19 straight games.

The New York Yankees will try to keep their winning streak going against the Toronto Blue Jays at home. They’ll have Marcus Stroman going up against Kevin Gausman on Friday at 7:05 pm. Meanwhile, the Phillies will travel to Seattle to get back on track against the Mariners for a three-game series. It will be Tyler Phillips for the Phillies going up against Bryan Woo of the Mariners on Friday at 9:40 pm.
