Jackson Holiday Hits First Grandslam In Baltimore Orioles 10-4 Win Against Blue Jays

Wednesday afternoon at the Yard, the Baltimore Orioles wrapped up their seven-game homestand with a 4-10 win against the Blue Jays. 

At the bottom of the first, Ryan Mountcastle opened this game up, putting the O’s on 0-2. With Anthony Santander on second and Gunnar Henderson on first, Mountcastle came to the plate and connected with the first pitch from Paolo Espino, an 89.1 mph four-seam fastball and hit his second triple of the season getting Santander and Henderson over the plate. 

Colton Cowser, in the bottom of the second, extended the O’s lead to 0-3 with his 16th homer of the season. 

Addison Barger, in the top of the third, hit his second homer of the season, getting the Blue Jays their first run of the game to make it 1-3.

Gunnar Henderson scored in the bottom of the third, extending the O’s lead 1-4. 

Ernie Clement, in the top of the fourth, scored for the Blue Jays to make it a 2-4 ballgame.

The Blue Jays earned their third run with George Springer at the top of the fifth. 

Bottom of the fifth, bases were loaded, the first two patches from Yerry Rodríguez to Jackson Holliday were an 84.7 mph slider strike and a 96.2 mph four-seam fastball foul. The third pitch to Holiday was an 85.4 mph slider and he hit a grand slam 109.2 mph, 439 feet to right field, and Ryan Mountcastle, Cedric Mullins, and Jordan Westburg scored, extending the O’s lead to 3-8. 

The last player to hit a grand slam as their first career homer in Baltimore Orioles franchise history was Fritz Connally in 1985. The first was Frank Baker in 1973. Today, Jackson Holiday did it to become one of only three to do it.

Also, in the bottom of the fifth, James McCann scored after Anthony Santander hit a single, extending the O’s lead to 3-9.

The Blue Jays earned their fourth run with Daulton Varsho in the top of the sixth, making it a 4-9 ballgame. 

The O’s earned their tenth run with Colton Cowser scoring in the bottom of the seventh after Gunnar Henderson hit a single to help make it a 4-10 game.

In the 13-game season series between the Orioles and Blue Jays, the O’s with their win on Wednesday improved to 6-4 against Toronto so far this year. Last year 

the Orioles won the series 10-3. The two teams wrap up the season series when they meet in Toronto August 6-8 which is part of the Orioles longest road trip of the season, an 11-day, 10-game stretch from August 1-11 starting at Cleveland for four games, then heading to Toronto for three games, and ending their road trip with three games at Tampa Bay.
