While the rumor mill was busy at work Saturday, the Red Sox confirmed Saturday night they acquired catcher Danny Jansen from the Toronto Blue Jays.
In exchange for Jansen, the Sox gave up minor league infielders Cutter Coffey and Eddinson Paulino, and minor league right-handed pitcher Gilberto Batista.
Jansen has played in 470 Major League games, all with the Blue Jays since 2018. He was selected by Toronto in the 16th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.
Jansen is a right-handed hitter who has batted .222 (314-for-1,413) with 71 home runs and a .733 OPS in his career, making 383 starts at catcher and 18 as the designated hitter.
In the 2024 season, Jansen in 61 games this has hit .212 (42-for-198) with 13 doubles, six home runs, and a .672 OPS.
The Red Sox said Saturday night, “To make room for Jansen on the 40-Man Roster, the Red Sox designated right-handed pitcher Alex Speas for assignment.”
Speas was claimed off waivers by Boston on June 29 but has been with Triple-A Worcester.
The Baltimore Orioles also made some moves on Saturday acquiring right-handed pitcher Zach Eflin and cash considerations from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Jackson Baumeister, minor league infielder/outfielder Mac Horvath, and minor league outfielder Mathew Etzel.
In addition to acquiring Eflin, the Orioles also acquired right-handed pitcher Seranthony Dominguez and outfielder Christian Pache from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for outfielder Austin Hays.
The Yankees Saturday acquired infielder/outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins in exchange for minor league catcher Agustín Ramírez, infielder Jared Serna, and infielder Abrahan Ramírez.
Chisholm Jr. hit .249 (96-for-386) with 46R, 14 doubles, 4 triples, 13 HR, 50 RBI, 39 BB, 4 HP and 22 SB in 101 games with the Marlins this season, appearing defensively in centerfield and at second base. His 39 walks this year are a career high.
The Tampa Bay Rays Saturday signed center fielder Theo Gillen, the No. 18 overall selection in the 2024 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The Rays also acquired right-handed pitcher Brody Hopkins, outfielder Aidan Smith, and a player to be named later from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for outfielder Randy Arozarena.
The Miami Marlins acquired Deyvison De Los Santos and Andrew Pintar from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for A.J. Puk and the Phillies have acquired right-handed relief pitcher Carlos Estévez from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for minor league pitchers Sam Aldegheri and George Klassen.
