Orioles Avoid Sweep Against Marlins in Extra Innings, 7-6

By Zachary McMahon-

The Miami Marlins hosted the Baltimore Orioles in the final game of the series on Thursday Afternoon as the Marlins were trying to get a sweep on the Orioles after taking the first two games of the series.

The Baltimore Orioles put Jorge Mateo on the 10-day injured list with a left elbow subluxation before the game. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said that Mateo will look for a additional opinion on the severity of the injury, but that he will be missing extended time. The O’s called up Connor Norby from Triple-A Norfolk to play second base. Norby played four games for the O’s in early June against the Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays. He had hits in the last three games of his stint, including his first major league home run on June 4 against Toronto.

After making his major league debut with a start on Wednesday, Chayce McDermott was sent down to Norfolk, while they called Bryan Baker back up to the majors. Righthander Jonathan Heasley was released after they DFA’d to clear a spot for McDermott.

O’s ace Corbin Burnes took 7 ⅓ innings on the mound, allowing six hits, three earned runs, and a walk with five strikeouts. Burnes has 991 strikeouts in his career, so he’s nine strikeouts away from 1,000.

Roddery Munoz started for the Marlins, going five innings, allowing six hits, six earned runs, two walks, and three strikeouts.

The O’s boomed to start the game, hitting three homers in the first four innings, from Anthony Santander, a three-run homer by Colton Cowser, and Norby’s second homer in the majors as the Orioles were leading 6-0. Santander’s solo home run was his 400th RBI of his career. Santander has also hit safely in 11 straight games as he went 2-for-5

After Josh Bell put the Marlins on the board with a solo homer in the sixth, for his second straight game with a homer. The Marlins went off for five runs to tie the game by the bottom of the ninth.

Mountcastle hit his 100th double of his career in the eighth inning off Declan Cronin.

In extra innings, Ryan Mountcastle brought home Jordan Westburg on a single, and then Jesus Sanchez threw to catcher Ali Sanchez to throw out Cedric Mullins who ran for Santander after a single, and then Ali Sanchez threw to second when Mountcastle was trying to advance on the throw, as it was a bizarre double play to end the inning.

In the home half of the tenth, Ali Sanchez came in at catcher in the tenth after Jake Burger pinch hit for Nick Fortes, and was the tying run on a RBI single by Bell in the ninth. Bryan De La Cruz was the last batter in the ninth when he was struck out by Yennier Cano, and while Nick Gordon pinch hit for Jonah Bride, and then took over left field, Ali Sanchez took De La Cruz’s spot on the lineup.

Cionel Perez retired the side, which included strikeouts to Jesus Sanchez and Gordon, and a groundout by Otto Lopez, to seal the O’s win in extra innings, 7-6.

Xavier Edwards had his second straight multi-hit game, as he got three hits in Wednesday’s win, and he hit two singles in Thursday’s loss, as he has reached safely in 11 straight games, although his streak of five straight games drawing a walk ended, which was the longest streak for a Marlins hitter since Jorge Soler had 10-straight games with a walk in June 2023.

Along with his homer, Bell also got an RBI single in the ninth, which was his 998th career hit, as he’s just two away from 1,000.

Cronin pitched three innings, as he has pitched 50.1 innings without surrendering a home run this season, which is the longest streak to start the season in Marlins history, passing RHP Jay Powell, who had 49.1 innings before allowing a home run in the World Series champion season of 1997. He’s leading the majors as he’s one out ahead of Nationals pitcher Dylan Floro who currently has 50 innings without a home run.

Both Bell and Jonah Bride extended their hitting streaks to four games, with Bride going 1-for-2 with a walk and a single, while Bell also has an on-base streak of seven games.

The Marlins will be traveling to Milwaukee to start a three-city road trip for the only time this season, as they will also be going to Tampa Bay and Atlanta for a nine-game road trip. Friday’s starter will be Trevor Rogers going up against Freddy Peralta at 8:10 pm, the Marlins have not named a starter for both Saturday and Sunday.

The Orioles will be back in Baltimore when they face the San Diego Padres in a weekend series. Grayson Rodriquez will be starting for the Orioles, while the Padres have not named a starter at the time of writing. The game will be starting at 7:05 pm on MASN.
