The 2024 MLB Home Run Derby took place on Monday night at Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX.
The first round of the Home Run Derby were with the eight participants, with the top four advancing. Alex Bohm and Jose Ramirez both tied for the lead with 21 home runs, Bobby Witt Jr. had 20, and Teoscar Hernandez had 19, as he eliminated Adolis Harcia who went third in the lineup, and also had eliminated Marcell Ozuna who had 16. Pete Alonso had 12, and Gunnar Henderson who went last, was in last place with 11.
In the second round, it was Bohm against Hernandez, and Ramirez against Witt Jr. Bohm and Hernandez were tied at 14 after regulation, so they had a swing off in which Hernandez won with 16 home runs, while Bohm had 15. Witt Jr. won against Ramirez 17-12, and it was Hernandez and Witt Jr. going in the final.
Hernandez went first and got 14 homers, Witt Jr. had a chance in his last swing to tie it at 14, but he shanked the ball to secure the victory for Hernandez.
Hernandez is the first Los Angeles Dodgers player to win the Derby. There were 12 Dodgers that have participated in the Derby, and Joc Pederson, who’s now on the Arizona Diamondbacks, was the only Dodger to make it to the final round in 2015, in which he got edged out by Todd Frazier.
Garcia was the only non-All-Star to be in the Derby, as all of the others will be playing tonight for the All-Star game on FOX.
