Former Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans receiver and kick returner Jacoby Jones died at age 40 on Sunday at his home in New Orleans, LA.
Jones spent his first four seasons on the Texans, although his 2012 season with the Baltimore Ravens was where he made his name.
He was famous for the Mile High Miracle where he caught a big pass from Joe Flacco, which was a 70-yard touchdown pass that tied the game in the final seconds in the AFC Divisional Playoff game against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos, as the game was lead into overtime, in which Justin Tucker would win it in double overtime to advance the Ravens to the AFC Championship against the New England Patriots, where they would win 28-13.
Then Jones had the longest play in Super Bowl history with a 108-yard kickoff return in Super Bowl XLVII against the San Francisco 49ers, as the Ravens won 34-31 after a controversial no-call on a pass interference on Michael Crabtree in the final drive.
He would spend the next two seasons with the Ravens before he was released in the 2015 offseason, where he split time with the San Diego Chargers and the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2015, in his final NFL season.
He played for the Monterrey Steel of the National Arena League (NAL) in eight games, catching 19 receptions for 169 yards and one touchdown, while he returned a field goal for a touchdown.
He officially retired in September 2017 on a one-day contract on the Ravens so he could retire with them.
No official cause of death has been announced at the time of writing, but his family released a statement through the NFLPA.
It read, “We want to express our gratitude for all the kind thoughts and support you have shown us during this challenging time. Your ongoing support and respecting our privacy means a lot to us. We are deeply saddened to share that Jacoby Jones, a beloved former Ravens football player from New Orleans and proud graduate of a historically black college, has passed away at the age of 40.”
