Phillies Blast Dodgers off Turner Grand Slam, 10-1

By Zachary McMahon-

The Philadelphia Phillies hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers at Citizens Bank in Philadelphia, PA in the series opener on Tuesday night. The Phillies had lost three out of the last four games, while the Dodgers lost the series finale against the Milwaukee Brewers, 9-2 as they could not complete the sweep in the weekend series on Sunday.

The Phillies activated Bryce Harper off the 10-day injured list on Tuesday, so they sent Kody Clemens back down to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Also, Kyle Scwarber was activated off the injured list Monday, so outfielder David Dahl was designated for assignment.

The Dodgers put Tyler Glasnow on the 15-day injured list with lower back tightness, so they called up Michael Petersen from the Oklahoma City Baseball Club.

Zach Wheeler started for the Phillies as he went five innings before exiting with back stiffness after allowing a homer to Cavan Biggio in the fifth. Wheeler opened up with a three-pitch strikeout to Shohei Ohtani. However, despite the injury both manager Rob Thomson and Wheeler said that he should make his next scheduled start against the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.

Bobby Miller started for the Dodgers as he would allow a whopping nine runs on ten hits in four innings. Up to this game, the most he allowed in a game was seven in his rookie season last season on June 17 against the San Francisco Giants, in the 15-0 blowout loss.

The Phillies started out with a RBI Single by Rafael Marchan, and a two-run single by Kyle Schwarber in the second inning.

In the fourth, Johan Rojas on his second single in the game hit an RBI single  that brought home Brandon Marsh to make it 4-0. After a walk to Scwarber, with Marchan over at third, and Rojas moving to second, Trea Turner hits his sixth career grand slam against his former team as the Phillies jumped out to a 8-0 lead. Turner has hit five homers in the last seven games.

The six-run fourth inning ended with a solo homer by Bryston Stott, as the Phillies had a 9-0 lead. Marsh added an insurance run in the seventh with a solo homer off Petersen of his own with the score of 10-1.

With two outs in the seventh inning, Kiké Hernandez came in to pitch for the Dodgers for the second time in his career and also at Citizens Bank Park as he also pitched in 2018 on his first stint with the Dodgers. He retired all four batters he faced to end the game, as the Phillies win 10-1, which is their largest victory since a 12-1 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 22, in which Wheeler also started in the game.

The Phillies will be playing the second game of their series as Christopher Sanchez will be going up against Gavin Stone at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
