The Atlanta Braves hosted the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday Afternoon at Truist Park in Atlanta, GA in the series finale, where the Braves were trying to sweep the series.
Ramon Laureano started in right field for the Braves after pinch hitting for Forrest Wall, who started the first couple of games in the series after being called up from Triple-A Gwinnett.
Reynaldo Lopez pitched for the Braves as he threw five scoreless innings, allowing seven hits, one walk, and six strikeouts. The Braves hit three homers in the shutout, with a pair of two-run homers from Sean Murphy and Laureano’s solo shot in the fourth to left center.
Tigers starter Tarik Skubal only lasted four innings, allowing the Laureano homer and then Ozzie Albies scoring on a throwing error by the pitcher himself. Mason Englert did not allow another run after the Murphy homer in the fifth, as he pitched until the seventh, where Joey Wentz took over in the eighth, and struck out Jarred Kelenic and Albies, and a Marcell Ozuna fly out, but the offense would not crack a run.
The Tigers would not get a hit after the sixth when Andy Ibanez hit an infield single for his
second hit of the game, as Aaron Bummer, Daysbel Hernandez, and Grant Holmes did not allow a single base runner from the Tigers, as they kept their 7-0 shutout win to complete the sweep. Murphy led the Braves along with his two homers, hitting two singles in the second and seventh, and scored in the second on an RBI single by Albies.
Austin Riley and Kelenic both hit doubles, and Riley and Albies were both hit by pitches by Skubal in the first and fourth respectively.
Along with Ibanez, Wenceel Perez and Gio Urshela all had two-hit games for the Tigers, all six of these hits were singles.
The Braves will play a three-game series against the New York Yankees starting on Friday at Yankee Stadium. Friday’s game will start at 7:10 pm on Apple TV+ as it will be Chris Sale against Carlos Rodon.
