Sunbelt Conference Action Georgia State Versus Georgia Southern

By Darryl Harding Sr

Despite a closely contested game, the score tied at the end of each quarter, Georgia Southern’s Shy Booker hit a jumper to start the fourth that seemed promising for the Eagles in their attempt to improve a 13-6 record.

A timely steal by Alyssa Philip, Georgia States forward, would unfortunately prove to be Georgia Southern’s undoing, swinging momentum and the  Panthers controlled the fourth quarter, winning 74 to 66.

Slightly owning the upper hand in the stat books on assists, steals and blocks, Georgia Southern’s fast break points and points in the paint, left Georgia State with the obvious advantage.

Panthers 44 points in the paint, compared to the Eagles 30, along with solid play and a game high 20 points, from Crystal Henderson, would inspire the Panthers to walk away with the victory.

Although Eagles guard Tarren Ward was right behind her with 19 points, being outscored 23 to 15 in the fourth quarter was more than Georgia Southern could take. With everybody chasing Marshall’s conference record at 8-0, Sunbelt wins are at a premium.

Georgia State now 5-3 will travel to Old Dominion for a game Saturday at 1:00pm, while Georgia Southern, now 3-5 in the conference, will host Marshall Saturday at 2:00pm.
