2023 NFL Season Week 3 Preview: Detroit Lions vs Atlanta Falcons

By Stephen Ur

The Atlanta Falcons will be on the road for the first time this season as they travel to Detroit to take on the Lions in Week 3. The Falcons won both of their first two games at home over the Carolina Panthers and Green Bay Packers.

The Falcons’ success this season comes much by the way of their running game. Tyler Allgeier scored two touchdowns in the Week 1 win over Carolina, and eighth overall pick Bijan Robinson rushed for 124 yards and was a key factor as the Falcons overcame a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Packers in Week 2.

Meanwhile, the Lions have been impressive as well to start the season. They opened up the 2023 season by defeating the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs on the road. They then played a high-scoring game against the Seattle Seahawks, ultimately falling in overtime.

The interesting matchup in this game will be the running game going up against Detroit’s defense. Led by Aidin Hutchinson, the Falcons could have a tough time running the football, which will mean quarterback Desmond Ridder will have to pass more in this game.

They will need to step up in that category, especially in this game as Lions cornerback CJ Gardner-Johnson is out for not just this game, but also the entire 2023 season. Wide receivers Drake London and Cordelle Patterson, along with tight end Kyle Pitts, will look to make big plays on Sunday.

Kickoff from Ford Field in Detroit is set for 1 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcasted on FOX.
