The Washington Commanders traveled to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles. The Eagles coming in were 3-0 on the season while the Commanders were 2-1. Philadelphia stayed undefeated with the win in the overtime thriller while Washington fell to 2-2.
The Commanders struck first with a 14 play 75 yard drive that ended in a Curtis Samuel one yard rushing touchdown to give the Commanders a 7-0 lead. The Eagles then returned the favor with a 12 play 75 yard drive that ended with a D’Andre Swift five yard rushing touchdown which tied the game at 7-7 after the first quarter.
Washington scored on their second drive making them two for two on their first two drives. The Commanders once again traveled 75 yards this time in seven plays which ended in a Terry McLaurin touchdown. The touchdown was a bit unconventional as Brian Robinson Jr fumbled on a rushing attempt and McLaurin recovered it in the endzone.
The Commanders then furthered their lead with a Joey Slye field late in the second quarter. The Eagles scored a field goal of their own before halftime when Jake Elliott hit a 41 yard field goal to bring the score to 17-10.
The Eagles coming out the half scored 11 straight points in the third quarter to take their first lead of the game. Jake Elliott hit his second field goal from 47 yards putting the Eagles within four points. A.J Brown on the next drive had a receiving touchdown from Jalen Hurts. Brown caught the pass short before taking it 59 yards to the end zone. The Eagles then went for the two point conversion which Kenneth Gainwell ran and was successful. The two point conversion gave Philadelphia a 21-17 point lead.
Jake Elliott hit his third field goal of the game from 36 yards which put the Eagles up seven points. Washington then tied it up with a Brian Robinson Jr 15 yard rushing touchdown.
Late into the fourth quarter the Philadelphia Eagles had the Jalen Hurts to A.J Brown connection strike again with a 28 yard pass from Hurts to Brown. The Eagles led by seven with 1:43 left in the game.
Sam Howell had a successful two minute drill and drove down the field to tie the game. Jahan Dotson scored the tying touchdown on a 10 yard pass from Howell. After the fourth quarter the game was tied at 31 and was sent to overtime.
The Commanders won the toss and had a very quick three plays for five yards which ended in a punt. The Eagles drove down and had Jake Elliott hit his fourth field goal of the game from 54 yards to give the Eagles the 34-31 win.
Postgame Terry McLaurin said “We got to learn from this” while teammate Jonathan Allen said “We’ll be better on Thursday.”
The Commanders will have a chance to back Jonathan Allen’s statement when they take on the Chicago Bears on Thursday Night Football on October 5 at 8:15PM EST.
