After the O’s defeated the Cardinals, 11-5, in Monday night’s three-game series opener, the Birds fell to the Cardinals 5-2 Tuesday night on their 144th game of the season.
St. Louis Cardinals got into this game at the top of the first with Paul Goldschmidt hitting his 24th homer to make it a 1-0 game.
St Louis grabbed their second run of the game at the top of the second with Willson Contreras scoring to put the Cardinals out front 2-0.
Top of the fourth Cardinals grabbed their third run with Richie Palacios hitting his second homer to put the Cardinals on top 3-0.
Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson both scored in the bottom of the fifth to get the Orioles into this game, and make it a 3-2 game.
Top of the seventh the Cardinals sealed their 5-2 win with Richie Palacios hitting his third homer of the season and then Lars Nootbaar hitting a single to drive in Jordan Walker.
With Tuesday night’s loss to the Cardinals the Orioles drop to 43-27 at home this year and 24-19 in Interleague play.
In his first Major League appearance since April 13, 2022, John Means will take the loss in his 2023 debut. Means allowed three runs on four hits (2 HR) with one strikeout in 5.0 innings. He threw 75 pitches, 55 strikes.
Gunnar Henderson tallied the 100th run scored of his career in the fifth inning with 88 runs scored this year. Henderson needs just two runs to tie Cal Ripken, Jr. (90 in 1982) for the most runs by a rookie in Orioles history.
Adley Rutschman collected his 19th multi-walk performance of the season with walks in the first and fifth inning, the most by an O’s batter in one season since Nick Markakis also collected 19 in 2008.
