Howard University Drop Season Opener

The Howard Bison traveled on the road to face the Eastern Michigan Eagles.

Eastern Michigan got out early with a Samson Evans rushing touchdown. The Eagles led 7-0 with about 11 minutes left in the first quarter.

Later in the quarter the Eagles got a safety to extend their lead to 9-0. The very next play on the kickoff Eastern Michigan’s Jaylon Jackson returned the kickoff 84 yards to put the Eagles up 16-0.

Howard down 16-0 after one quarter saw the lead only grow after Austin Smith threw a 20 yard touchdown to Tanner Krue which made the score 23-0.

The Bison responded after being down 23-0 with a Quinton Williams 69 yard passing touchdown to Jamarr Ebron. Dylan West missed the PAT attempt but nonetheless Howard finally got on the board.

Eastern Michigan answered back right away with their second kick return touchdown of the day. The Returner Hamze El-Zayat took the kick 96 yards, extending the Eagles lead to 30-6.

Howard hit a field goal at the end of the half to bring the score to 30-9. Down by 21 Howard responded in the third quarter with two touchdowns.

Kasey Hawthorne scored both touchdowns in the third quarter. The first a two yard touchdown run with about eight minutes left and about five minutes later received a 23 yard touchdown pass Quinton Williams.

The Bison were within seven points going into the fourth quarter with a score of 30-23. Howard wouldn’t score any points and not complete a comeback.

The Eagles did very little scoring, only adding on a field goal to make the final score 33-23. 

Howard drops their season opener and starts the season 0-1. The Bison will look to bounce back in their home opener next Saturday against the Morehouse Maroon Tigers. The game will be at Greene Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 PM.
